What will our future cities look like? As the global population grows and resource demands increase there is an ever-growing demand for healthy, environmentally friendly, resource-efficient communities. Innovative energy technologies have an important role to play in enabling sustainable and livable cities. To this end, the Advanced Energy Centre is building capacity for and positioning Canadian energy innovation as an integral part of innovative urban development projects globally.

Re-Thinking Utility Engagement on Zero-Carbon Urban Development

Zibi

In close collaboration with Hydro Ottawa and Windmill Developments, the Advanced Energy Centre is exploring methods to rethink the role of the utility and deliver consumer value within Zibi, a large mixed-use brownfield redevelopment project in Ottawa and Gatineau. Located in the Ottawa River between Ontario and Quebec, Zibi offers a glimpse into a future where communities are built to promote healthy, cost-efficient, high-performance living.
Through our partnership with Hydro Ottawa, we are striving to help Zibi become recognized globally for innovative community-focused energy management tools and deployment of clean energy technology. The Advanced Energy Centre is supporting strategy development to leverage Canadian technologies and innovations in the development of sustainable communities, both domestically and globally.

Hydro Ottawa Energy Innovation Design Charette

The Advanced Energy Centre and Hydro Ottawa convened a group of innovators and industry experts in May 2015, for a design charette focused on identifying and discussing innovative tools and solutions to enable the vision for Zibi’s energy system.

True North Strong

The True North Strong (TNS) proposal envisions a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose, sports, entertainment and convention complex in Sudbury, Ontario. This development poses an opportunity for Greater Sudbury Utilities (GSU) to explore and demonstrate new opportunities to deliver of customer value, as well as address the environmental concerns created by any large greenfield development.

True North Strong Energy Innovation Design Charette

In Feb 2017, the Advanced Energy Centre and GSU convened a diverse group of stakeholders, entrepreneurs, utilities, property developers, government and technology companies for a design charette, focused on innovative approaches to the energy system at the proposed TNS greenfield development. Attendees co-created an energy vision, brainstormed new approaches, pitched strategies, and ideated innovative energy solutions for TNS.
