The latest buzz at MaRS

Pssst… have you heard? There are bees on the MaRS roof and they’re slowly waking up to the sounds of spring.

That’s right! Last summer, the MaRS Centre Heritage Building had two beehives installed on its rooftop, joining the Fairmont Royal York Hotel and the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts as the latest Toronto organization to take on urban beekeeping.

The MaRS Social Committee undertook the beekeeping initiative for three main reasons:

  1. To increase awareness of colony collapse disorder — the increasingly serious decline in the North American honeybee population.
  2. To provide a fun, educational and uncommon team-building activity for MaRSians.
  3. And, last but not least, to produce and consume delicious honey. Yum!

As we roll into our second year with the bees we hope to bring you regular updates on our progress. In the meantime, check out some pictures from last summer, including the night we installed the hives.
